Dang, my car burned up!

I had this one teenage customer come in to get car insurance. She was very excited to have a new car. Grandma had sweetly paid cash for the car and signed it over to her. And then I started running the numbers for her car insurance. When she saw how much it costs to insure a brand new driver in a brand new car her excitement started to turn into frustration. I had to explain that young drivers pay the most for insurance. And it is even more expensive when you add a new car to the equation. At that point she decided she just wanted the bare minimum coverage required by the state. I then went on to explain certain situations that would not be covered to make sure she fully understood her choices. We finally agreed to add comprehensive coverage and a little extra liability. She got limits she could afford and the car had some minimal coverage. In case you didn't know the comprehensive coverage covers the car if it is stolen, gets washed away in a river, it burns up, basically things that don’t include hitting some other car or some other thing.
She left the office and she clearly wasn’t happy paying for the insurance. I wasn’t thrilled with the coverage she chose, but I was at least happy that she finally agreed to add a few extra things. I did what I could and I knew she understood the risks she was taking.
Fast forward three months. I read that there was a fire in the garage of a home. The people were happy that they made it out safely through the flames. Several cars burned and the house was severely damaged. I didn’t think twice about it until the teenage girl came strolling in to tell me her car caught on fire and was a total loss.
